Corcoran College of Art + Design has established a code of student conduct that governs its relationship with the student body. Rules and regulations have been firmly established to ensure the safety and well being of all the students.


Student conduct should be orderly and respectful of the rights, safety and privacy of others. Students are expected to keep the facilities clean, treat equipment (both the College's and that of other students) with care, and avoid conduct or actions that offend or disturb others. These rules and regulations of the Code of Student Conduct are binding upon enrollment and all students agree to subscribe to them. Administrative withdrawal or dismissal may result from failure to meet College standards of conduct.


The Corcoran reserves the right to dismiss any student whose conduct is detrimental to the College or Museum. Disciplinary action for any violations of the Code of Student Conduct fall under the jurisdiction of the Dean and Associate Dean.

  1. Academic Dishonesty
    Using deception in any way that results in avoidance of academic responsibility, such as cheating and plagiarism.

  2. Cheating
    Attempting to copy, force or otherwise gain information from another or from a prohibited source, with the direct intention of circumventing the academic testing process.

  3. Plagiarism
    The reproduction of another's visual, verbal or written material without proper citation and with the intent to deceive. In the written form this includes, but is not limited to, verbatim copying or substantial paraphrasing, and presenting as your own the work of someone else. See Acceptable Use Policy.

  4. Behaviors Disruptive to Another or to the Public
    1. Intimidation or harassment of any member of the Corcoran community
    2. Purposeful interruption of a class or College function
    3. Creating a public disturbance or inconvenience
    4. Fighting
    5. Unreasonable noise
    6. Tampering with fire alarms or firefighting equipment

  5. Theft, Willful Damage of Property and Unauthorized Entry
    1. Any kind of abuse or misuse of College property including Library items, equipment, or College housing
    2. Theft, defacing, damage or destruction of property, including unauthorized graffiti
    3. Gaining access to any College facilities through unauthorized use of keys

  6. Fire, Weapons and Explosives
    1. The possession or use of any kind of firearm, explosive, fireworks, or any other incendiary materials or weapons
    2. Lighting or attempting to light a fire

  7. Smoking
    Smoking in prohibited areas is extremely hazardous; any person found smoking in non-designated areas is subject to an immediate $50 fine and risks dismissal.

  8. Drugs
    The purchase, sale, possession or use of an illegal substance or drug on any College premise is prohibited.

  9. Alcohol Abuse
    1. Any behavior that involves the abuse of alcohol and/or inappropriate or destructive behavior brought on by alcohol abuse
    2. Violation of local and state laws in effect
    3. Students should visibly display their Corcoran ID cards at all Corcoran sponsored events where alcohol is served

  10. Gambling
    Illegal gambling is prohibited on any of the College premises or at any official function sponsored by the College, student groups or College affiliated organizations.

  11. Giving False Information or Failure to Provide Requested Information
    1. Providing false information with the intent to defraud or deceive
    2. Failure to identify yourself to College officials, including security guards, when requested to do so

  12. Misuse of Official Documents
    Any sort of misappropriation, forgery, alteration, or misuse of academic or non-academic records or identification cards. This includes the unauthorized use of the Corcoran letterhead system, seal or logotype. In the case of academic records, such as report cards or transcripts, disciplinary action is within the jurisdiction of the Dean and Associate Deans.

  13. Visitors
    1. Students are responsible for the conduct of their guests
    2. Guests must abide by the Corcoran Code of Student Conduct




If a student believes that they have been subjected to a violation of the Code of Student Conduct, they have the right to report the alleged incident(s) to the Associate Dean of Students or a designee. The Associate Dean of Students can be reached in the College Office at the Downtown Campus. Complainants are not required to complain directly to the offending individual.

Retaliation against a staff member or student for having complained of a violation of the Code of Student Conduct, or against a staff member or student who provided information during the investigation, can be the subject of a complaint under this procedure. If such retaliation in fact occurred, appropriate corrective action will be taken and appropriate discipline or sanctions imposed.

The Associate Dean of Students will meet with the parties involved and will attempt to resolve the matter informally. However, this step will only be taken where it is appropriate.

If the nature of the allegations makes such informal investigation inappropriate or if such informal efforts do not resolve the matter, the Associate Dean of Students will ask the staff member or student to file a written complaint. That complaint should describe the alleged violation in as much detail as possible. The staff member or student should submit names of witnesses who he or she believes have information relevant to the investigation and any relevant documentary evidence.

The Associate Dean of Students will then inform the student alleged to have violated the Code of Student Conduct, and will give him or her the opportunity to respond in writing to the allegations and evidence against him or her, to submit the names of witnesses who he or she believes have information relevant to the investigation, and to submit any relevant documentary evidence.

The Associate Dean of Students or designee will conduct an investigation to determine whether a violation of the Code of Student Conduct has occurred. The investigation may include meeting with the complainant, the respondent, and other individuals who may have relevant information. Relevant records or other documents may also be reviewed. The investigation will be conducted promptly and thoroughly, with the intent that the process be completed within thirty (30) days of the assertion of the complaint.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the Associate Dean of Students will submit the evidence and a report to the Academic Action Review Board. The Academic Action Review Board shall meet to review the evidence. At its discretion, the Academic Action Review Board may allow the complainant and respondent to make oral presentations at that meeting.

If the Academic Action Review Board concludes that the investigation establishes that a violation has occurred, appropriate corrective action will be taken. Corrective action may include imposition of discipline and sanctions ranging from reprimand or administrative withdrawal to dismissal from the College.

The person alleged to have violated the Code of Student Conduct will be notified of the decision of the Academic Action Review Board in writing.

If the investigation establishes that the complainant intentionally made false-rather than good faith but erroneous-accusations, appropriate discipline or sanctions will be imposed on that person. This provision does not apply to a complaint that is made in good faith but cannot be verified.

During the investigative process, the status of the person(s) alleged to have violated the Code of Student Conduct would be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Academic Action Review Board. The decisions of the Academic Action Review Board shall be final and may not be appealed. Appeal to the Dean is permissible only with proof of new evidence.


All students are asked to sign the following HONOR PLEDGE for the 2004-2005 academic year. Upon receipt of this handbook students will be asked to sign the following pledge in the College office.

During the 2004-2005 academic year the Honor Pledge Committee will be instituting the new Honor System for the College. Students interested in participating in the creation of the new Honor System should contact the Associate Dean of Students Judith Nordin at jnordin@corcoran.org.
