Summer 2008
Pre-College Programs
FOCUS on Fine Art Photography

Spend Your Summer Immersed in the Pre-College
Experience at the Corcoran.

In 2007, the Corcoran launched FOCUS on Fine Art Photography, an innovative program offering high school students an intensive introduction to photography as a form of art and self-expression. Drawing on the Corcoran’s nationally recognized faculty, this two-week residential program combine lectures, visits to museums and galleries, individual critiques, and ample studio and shooting time. Typical day sessions include a lecture by a faculty member or guest speaker, a showing of great images that bear on the day’s topic, and an open-ended assignment that enlarges each student’s understanding of how photography functions on a purely aesthetic basis. Students work both digitally and with film, and experiment with a variety of photographic genres and subjects.
NOTE: STUDENTS NEED TO BRING A MANUAL SLR OR RANGE-FINDER CAMERA

Two-Week Residential Program

Materials fee: $175
Room, board, and activities fee: $1200

No formal prerequisite is required for the Corcoran’s FOCUS programs. Students with photo coursework at the high school level as well as those with an interest in starting formal instruction are welcome. Please note that the room, board, and activities fee is mandatory. Housing and meals for the FOCUS programs are provided at Georgetown University and students are supervised at all times by faculty members, teaching assistants, or residential assistants. On the final Friday, a FOCUS exhibition is held in the Corcoran’s White Walls gallery. Parents, other family members, and friends are invited to attend the “opening” reception to congratulate the photographers and view their new work.
